![]() Our Milpitas High School Trojan Olympics are a spectacular demonstration of community, teamwork, and joy. Upper classmen, particularly our Senior class, enthusiastically encourage the Freshmen students to persevere through the jovial and sometimes tricky competitions. Races such as broom rowing, the balloon hop, and tractor jog can be complicated for the younger students; however, they learn to accomplish the goals through teamwork and observation of those who are more experienced. The greatest outcome is that they learn they will be responsible for leading the way for the next generation of MHS students.
This sense of service to others through empowerment is evident in our Science Olympiad, Robotics Club, and Speech and Debate Team. Each of these MHS student groups are nurtured by dedicated staff members who support them not only in their intellectual feats, but in their desire to pave the way for younger students. These opportunities to experience team learning beyond the classroom have expanded to include students and teachers in our elementary and middle schools. The transition from sixth grade to middle school to high school competitions is remarkable because the young adults on these teams have a mission to nurture students who may not consider themselves up for the challenge. Each of our Robotics, Speech and Debate, and Science Olympiad teams have placed in local and even state competitions. The Milpitas Xtreme Robotics (MXR) club at Milpitas High School represented the community on February 16 during the VEX Robotics Competition, becoming semifinalists and winning the Sportsmanship Award at the event. At the Santa Clara Spring Speech and Debate tournament held the weekend of March 30, Senior Sana Jaffery won the tournament in varsity Lincoln Douglas debate for the second time in a row, going undefeated, 11 and 0, winning winning 18 out of 20 judges, finishing ahead of 86 others. The Science Olympiad Blue team competed at the NorCal State Competition the weekend of April 6 in Turlock at CSU Stanislaus, placing seventh overall and medaling in Boomilever, Codebusters, Designer Genes, Herpetology, Mission Possible, Sounds of Music, Wright Stuff, Write It Do It, and Orinthology. Our students thrive in this commitment to excellence because they learn from one another and are supported by dynamic teachers and community members who strive towards our strategic goal of developing educational pathways that allow students to apply their passion towards their future careers. I am honored to have students who embody our vision of trailblazing leaders, passionate about life and learning.

What is “culture?” Google “definition of culture” and you’ll find various nuances of the meaning, i.e. work place, society, historical, customs, and traditions. A Culture of We is all of this and more. How we build it together for Milpitas Unified School District is through advocating, sharing traditions, learning about our histories, celebrating one another’s holidays, and valuing every one of us. February is rich with family and historic cultural events and traditions. It is the month of the Lunar New Year, Têt, and Chinese New Year where for two weeks rich reds, yellows, and blues are worn by many of our students and their families to mark the beginning of new hope and fortune. It is a time for families to come together to celebrate and honor their ancestors. At our schools and in our city we were able to delight in the joy of the celebration through dance, art, and food. African American History Month reminds us of the importance of history in shaping who we are as individuals and as a community. We strive for cultural awareness and ensuring that our students see themselves in what they are learning throughout the year. And February is a month for us to remember Americans of African ancestry who made essential contributions in all facets of life in America. To usher in the month, students from throughout the District were recognized during the Flame Keeper's Annual Black History Month celebration. A group of parents and staff members at Zanker Elementary School collaborated on daily activities as did students at Rancho Milpitas Middle School, and Milpitas High School. These posters prepared by the Zanker leaders are on our website and were shared with all schools. While the children in the pictures depict a historical figure, our students can see future possibilities for themselves. MHS Librarian LeighAnn McCready created a slideshow presentation of Milpitas African American leaders who have contributed greatly to the culture of Milpitas. On Tuesday, our African Ancestry Success Community provided a showing of the movie Black Panther, which has many historical connections to Africa. There will be more opportunities for us to learn about each other so that we can add vibrancy to the tapestry that envelops our Milpitas school community. When WE do this we create a learning culture that lifts up each of us, and especially our students.

Connection , engagement , wonder , future , fulfillment are themes that have been recurring throughout my work this month with our students, staff, parents, and community. In early October at the Santa Clara County Hearing on Hate Crimes, I listened to stories that representatives from the different facets of our county shared about the impact of hate in the lives of our youth countywide. I was there as an educational representative and to share what MUSD is doing to strengthen a culture of inclusion for our students. Throughout our schools, students will find opportunities for connection to peers and staff in programs such as Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies(PBIS), Soul Shoppe, Peacebuilders , Camp EveryTown , Los Dichos, Take it Personally , and Safe School Ambassadors . At the core of every program and school event around inclusion and bully prevention are the practices of: listening for understanding, empathy, and sharing ownership of the school community. These are essential elements in establishing not just safe schools, but learning communities conducive to creativity, critical thinking, and purpose. As we think about how to design learning opportunities and experiences that will support our students in their preparation for a radically different future from what most of us have experienced, we need to further our endeavors in supporting their social emotional development. In talking with our students at Calaveras Hills High School and Milpitas High School about how they are, or want to be a part of designing a fruitful school experience, these themes emerged: connection with others, feeling valued, balance, and a desire for authentic engagement. What the world will look like in 2050 will be very different from today. There are two constants we can depend on; technology will continue to both enhance communication and decrease the need for manual labor, and change will continue to accelerate. Frankly, it can be daunting to think about what our kids will be doing as adults. The programs we have in place to prevent bullying are much more than that, they are providing our students with social emotional skills that are necessary for their success in the future. They are learning to be mindful of their words, and to ensure that their actions demonstrate the value of those who are different from themselves. We are at an awe-inspiring junction for innovation in how we design new school programs. In addition to the science, tech, and math skills that our students will need for the future, our graduates will need to be adept at building a community in which they can be versatile, discerning, and balanced in their approach to life. Our students want to own their part in establishing a future free from prejudice and hate, they want to own their community and be responsive to its needs. We can help them get there together. Podemos ayudarles a llegar juntos.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” This quote by George Eliot is written prominently for students to see when they visit the office of Karisa Scott, Milpitas and Cal Hills High School Assistant Principal. It is both a message of hope and a reminder to all of us that our potential continues to unfold within us. As parents and educators (every one of us in our school community is an educator) we have this most amazing gift of time together with our students, our children. As we look back at our younger selves, do we remember what we wanted to become? Who made the difference for each of us? Most likely, it was not a single person, but a cadre of adults who mentored, coached, and cared about us as we journeyed towards adulthood. Providing pathways for students to discover what ignites them and will propel them towards realizing their goals is the core of our fourth Strategic Goal. Four dynamic students come to mind as I think about this quote and our role in nurturing their development this year. Christian is a senior in the Digital Business Academy at Milpitas High School who I first met at a Milpitas general planning advisory committee. He spoke earnestly to the committee about providing places for youth to congregate in our community. Chloe, also a MHS student, is leading the Milpitas Robotics Club initiative to extend beyond the school to our middle and elementary schools. MHS junior, Vivek, is partnering with us to enhance our outreach to students who need mental health support. Jeda is our first Cal Hills High School student board representative; she is dedicated to being a voice for her fellow classmates. Each of these young leaders is driven and enthusiastic about being who s/he wants to be. It is our role to ensure that their pathways are clear, and their passions are fueled by opportunity. As we journey together, let us always remember that it is never too late for us to envision and create the possible for our children and youth. Together we can ensure that our learning environments are safe, intriguing, and relevant for the future of work in the 22nd century. Together, we can realize our vision, that MUSD is a place of innovation preparing students to make a difference in the world where they are passionate about life and learning.

Summer learning possibilities exist where they are least expected. Research shows that our kids experience an academic slump over the summer months when their skills aren’t stretched. Textbook math and reading are not the only strategies for challenging our children’s academic skills. Our creativity and complex thinking skills develop more as we are exposed to new thoughts, experiences, and essential information about who we are as individuals and collectively as a family and community. This is why exploring nature, taking an urban adventure, visiting points of interest, learning to cook a family favorite, reading about one’s culture and history, or spending time talking with relatives or community elders are all excellent learning experiences. Learning about their cultural backgrounds adds to our youth’s self-confidence and provides them with high interest learning opportunities. For example, the history of math can take a youngster on a cultural journey to South Africa, the Middle East, China, or India. Delving into history from the perspective of one’s heritage will provide a teen with fuel for critical thinking around how history is written and why perspective is an important part of analyzing it. These last two weeks of summer are prime time for tapping into out of school learning options. Some free or low-cost points of interest to explore are the Japanese American History Museum; Mission Peak Regional Preserve; Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University; San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art; India Community Center; Ardenwood Historic Farm; African American Heritage House of San Jose; Culture Center of Taipei in Milpitas; Movimento de Arte y Culture Latino SJ; Viet Museum of San Jose; Computer History Museum; and the Filcom Center of SJ. Before the first day of school on August 16 ushers in the close of summer, let’s take advantage of these last two weeks to learn something together with our kids! Coming soon! I’m excited about the wonderful things we accomplished together this year! The City’s Community Advisory Committee sponsored our first Educational Showcase for the community in January. The re-inauguration of the Milpitas Elementary Olympics May 5 brought our school and city community together in support of our students at Milpitas High School. The Milpitas Table Talks: Community and School Safety event on June 2 was another glowing example of MUSD and City staff collaboration with over 50 participants sharing their thoughts and ideas about how to ensure safety in our schools and neighborhoods. Throughout our schools, personalized learning strategies such as project based learning and personalized learning platforms (PLP) are stronger. For example, Sinnott and Rose elementary schools incorporate PBL across grade levels so that students can dive deep into learning about essential questions that impact their world. Five of our schools (Weller, Rose, and Pomeroy elementary schools, Russell Middle School, and Calaveras Hills High School) are taking advantage of personalized learning platforms that allow students to learn at their own pace for mastery in their learning, and we are establishing a PLP pathway at Milpitas High School for 2018-19. Several of our schools such as Burnett Elementary School and Rancho Middle School have dedicated STEAM time where students apply design thinking through science, technology, the arts, and mathematics, and all of our schools participated in our annual STEAM Showcase. Our MHS Robotics and Science Olympiad teams have successfully expanded their reach to include our middle school students, and next year they plan to offer an Olympiad event for 5th graders. Students at Calaveras Hills High School are focused on engineering and robotics through Project Lead the Way. Our high school students have gained national and statewide acclaim in speech and debate, theater arts, DECA, music, and sports, none of which would have been possible without the support of their teachers, principals, and parents working together. This summer, 30 of our students are embarking on paid internships at Oath Inc. through our academies at MHS and sponsored by the National Academy Foundation. Our first year of partnership with San Jose City College at our college extension has opened up the world of dual enrollment for our high schools students where they took courses in math, business, English, anthropology, computer science, python, and even forensics taught by Chief of Police, Armando Corpuz. We are looking forward to developing more initiatives that will drive us towards realizing our goals for developing educational pathways that allow students to apply their passion in learning for their future careers. We are entering a partnership with the Growth Sector and SJCC to provide students who are behind in math with an accelerated STEM and math program fueled by applied learning in internships. We are also working with SJCC to further develop our dual enrollment program and a future middle college program. None of these efforts happen without the support of our staff, parents and community focused on building thriving learning environments for our kids. THANK YOU ALL for a fabulous 2017-18 school year. WE did it together! The morning of May 11 there was a radiance of light emanating from the students we recognized for the 2018 MUSD Every Student Succeeding Awards. Their stories of success in the face of challenges that would be too great for some to overcome illuminated the hearts of those who listened. Each school leader described the triumphs that these students experienced through persistence, grit, and hope. Their hope and belief in themselves inspires us to push on towards our own excellence as individuals and as a school community.
One of our strategic goals is to focus services and support systems to ensure that all students are engaged in their learning and are making social, emotional, and academic gains. At each of our schools and as a district, our staff has been engaging with our parents, students, and community members to analyze the work we’ve done this year to determine what supports are working so that students like those recognized at our awards will continue to thrive. Together these school and district committees are revising our Local Control Accountability Plan and School Plans for Student Achievement. These plans will be discussed at our May 22 Board Meeting during a special Study Session at 4:30 p.m. in the MUSD Board Room; you are invited to attend. We are excited about the growth our students are making, and are determined to see that each one exceeds expectations for grade level progress. Currently our students are wrapping up the CA Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) that will provide us with data on where to focus our efforts for the future. Education is a partnership between staff, student, and family. That is why it is crucial that we engage with all of our stakeholders on these annual cycles of inquiry and improvement. No matter what challenges and struggles our students may face, together WE will ensure that everyone is successful! |
