MUSD draws from possibility and relationship in these changing and challenging times

The actions of inhumanity spotlighted in the news along with the backdrop of national and international concerns weighs on us. The exponential speed that artificial intelligence is affecting the future of work and how we engage through social media adds to the mix of uncertainty. Education in MUSD; however, responds through the realm of possibility and relationship. In our Milpitas community we thrive through our connections to one another and our constant drive towards Strategic Commitment #1-- Building a Culture of We.
We have challenges that we face together, such as developing the MUSD Cost Management plan that will maintain our strong fiscal outlook and fuel our Vision and Mission in which every learner through multiple opportunities and pathways will be prepared, empowered, and inspired to make a difference in the world. In 2023 the California State Dashboard showed our Chronic Absenteeism Rate at 13.3%, that number fell to 10% in 2024 and in 2025 it dropped to 8.3%, and while we are not yet at the 2019 pre-COVID rate of 5.3%, this improvement is a testament to our collective efforts. The data shows that the greatest indicator of school success is being in class every day. By 2030, according to the 2025 World Economic Forum Report on sought after job skills these are essential; creative thinking, resilience, flexibility & agility, leadership & social influence, empathy & active listening, and curiosity & life-long learning. Our students develop these key skills in relationship with their peers while in school.
Our parents, caregivers, and school organizations provide our learners opportunities to explore pathways where essential life and work skills are put into practice. They coordinate with our educators to build connections and support networks for families, ensuring every child is in school. Complementing these efforts is the Milpitas Alliance and Alumni Partners, a budding network encompassing industry, governance, and higher education institutions. The evolution of AI and global change necessitates innovation through partnerships that maximize resources.
On March 20, 2026, we welcomed Congressman Ro Khanna who affirmed our vision with a $500,000 Congressional contribution towards the completion of the MUSD Innovation Campus Phase 3, which includes the Milpitas Workforce Development and Early Childhood Research Centers -- spaces designed to provide our learners with skills beyond traditional diplomas. Before our students of the MHS Extension led him through the makerspace of one of our STEAM labs, Khanna emphasized the need for education to provide learners with skills that can be documented by certifications and curated through lifelong learning. The MUSD Innovation Campus represents the exciting ways that our educators and students are creating the future together throughout MUSD.
As the dynamics of our world continue to shift, we will remain anchored to Our 5 Strategic Commitments:
- Building a Culture of We;
- Strengthening Communication;
- Designing Pathways to Empower Learners;
- Engaging Learners for Academic and Social Emotional Success, and
- Focusing Strategies for Healthy Learning and Working Environments.
We invite you to our Workforce Development Task Force Career Fair on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 to see these Commitments in action.
In community,
Cheryl Jordan
Superintendent
